The third and last of my bottles of this wine and at last the wine was fully mature and probably at its peak.
1990 Barolo Brunate, Bricco Rocche Ceretto
Mature, medium deep brick colour.
The nose is wonderfully and typically mature Nebbiolo. Aromatic, with loads of mushrooms, quite a dollop of spearmint and a background of sweet dried prunes. The required tar can also be found lingering above the surface. I could just sit and sniff this wine for the whole evening.
The palate is fresh and initially a bit acidic, but soon the mashrooms, mint, roses and smoke spreads and fills the mouth. The tannins are typically dry but the years of maturation has tamed most of them and they are now mostly acting as the backup players in the background until they finally grow and give a good grip in the aftertaste. All the elements of the taste, smoke, mint, mushrooms linger beautifully in the persitent and slowly fading aftertaste. A beautiful wine , finally caught at its peak. It survives well a couple of hours in the glass, but not much more is find either that might have indicated an even more charming future.
An excellent paring to lamb racks with gratin Dauphinoise.
Cheers,
Anders
