WTN: Gottesfuss - incredible 'dry' Riesling

by Salil » Sun Apr 04, 2010 3:23 pm

2008 Van Volxem Wiltinger Gottesfuss Riesling Alte Reben
AP #17-09, 12% alcohol, from 120+ year old ungrafted vines in the Saar.
Starts out a little tight and unyielding, but with an hour of air this develops the most compelling aromatic profile I've ever smelled in a dry Riesling. Such an incredible scent with ripe peachy and white fruited flavours flecked with rosewater, orange blossom and exotic spicy notes. In the mouth it's barely dry, incredibly rich and expansive with amazing depth; there's a spectrum of fruit ranging from tart lime to riper mango and peach flavours accented by smoky and spicy elements, finishing long with a wash of minty, herbal notes that come in on the back end and leave a cool, refreshing sensation. Wow. Perhaps my favourite '08 from Germany so far. (Now to hope Crush has more...)

Sounds delicious, thank you for the note Salil. Great to read another note as enthusiastic as the one I posted some weeks ago of his 2008 Braunfels. I don't quite remember if the Gottesfuss alte Reben was among the bottles I acquired from van Volxem, but after reading your lovely note, I sure hope so.

Cheers,
Anders

David, about $50.

Anders - hope so too, it is a fantastic wine. I'm really enjoying what I've had from Van Volxem's 08s - the Volz was one exception; rather disappointing and a bit austere, but the Goldberg and the Saar Alte Reben bottlings have been superb. And this would rank among the best 'dry' German wines I have had in a good while.
