Seeking Advice...'02 Burg

by Richard Fadeley OLD » Thu Apr 01, 2010 10:10 pm

I bought on my trip to Burgundy a '02 JP Magnien 1st Cru, Les Faconnieres, and cannot find any tasting notes on this wine. I don't want to miss something, or preordain an otherwise outstanding bottle. Any ideas on when I should open this. I guess this yet another good case for buying at least 3 bottles of a wine, so as to increase ones chances to enjoy at least one bottle. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

There was a thread about 2002s on another site and the consensus seemed to be that they were drinking surprisingly well for Burg in its 8th year in a primary sort of way http://www.wine-pages.com/ubb/ultimateb ... 1;t=024714 . That should not prevent them from lasting and developing more complexity. I don't have much personal experience and am sitting on my stash of 1ers crus till after their 10th birthday but will probably open them before the 99s. A Rully from Jacqueson in the Côte Chalonnaise was already drinking very well a few weeks ago. Your 1er cru fom Morey-St.Denis, I think, should be more robust; I would hold on a bit.

I came very late to the Burgundy party and as such have only had one 2002. Consumed a Corton Clos du Roi at a restaurant last November. Sorry but the producer escapes me now. That wine had years ahead of it and I don't believe close to peaked. Very fruit forward with a wonderful nose but only a touch of the earth at this point in time. Needed time to bring out more complexity.

Richard,
I've had the vineyard (a tasty '05 from Lignier-Michelot) and I've had this producer, but not together. If you have decent storage I'd wait a few years., especially after waiting this long.
