Very good of the Massive variety. Opaque, nearly black, thick sturdy elephant legs, left grains of sediment in the glass. Rich, nearly overwrought, but tannin and acid well balanced. Bought at the winery.
This isn't the Zin I claim to like, and it is indeed riper than it really ought to be, but it's so thick and heavy and meaty that it pretty much gets away with it.
It was an appropriate match for a "Hungarian goulash" with lots of onions, marjoram, caraway and paprika.
Two nights later (Friday was halibut), I forgot to take the bottle out of the refrigerator, so it was only an hour and a half out, with spaghetti and meat/mushroom sauce.
The chill made the alcohol (14.7%, not especially high for the year and region) less noticeable and the acidity more noticeable, and the balance was still generally good.
It darned well ought to be good!! Cost me $31.50 at the winery ("member" discount from $35) in February '05.
