WTN: Herdade do Esporão Alandra Red

by Paul B. » Wed Mar 31, 2010 9:38 pm

Try as I might, I can't find any vintage date on this bottle. The winery's website lists the 2008 vintage, FWIW. Received this as a gift.

13% alc./vol. Closure made of compressed cork particles.

Intense, saturated cherry-garnet colour with violet at the meniscus. Nicely perfumed nose comprising vague plummy red fruit; somewhat reminiscent of certain Bulgarian Cabs. Crisp acidity; some residual sugar; some tannin. Simple, but with decent structure and texture. I think it would have been better had it spent time in some old neutral barrels, but it's not bad as is.

I've had this wine. It's by EU definitions a "Table Wine". That's why there is no real vintage designation.
It's a very good wine - especially for the price. I believe it received recognition at the Boston Globe's annual "Plonkapoluzza" a couple of years ago.
Cheers,

That's correct - it is a "Table Wine". I forgot to put that in my TN!

Esporao. I was at a tasting last fall and Baverstock was present. I felt the wines were becoming too "international" in style and the prices here are criminal. I am not familiar with the red described here but sounds OK eh.
