WTN: Goats Do Roam White 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Wed Mar 31, 2010 9:39 am

Fairview/Charles Back
WO Western Cape

A blend of Viognier, Riesling, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Muscat Blanc.

Light gold in the glass.

Lychee, marmalde on the nose.

Lychee, roses, good acidity, lemon, lime, grapefruit, a real bitter bite, medium weight, refreshing, quite rich.

Bitter citrus rind and mouthwatering on the finish.

This bottle was much tangier and edgier than a previous one I tried in the fall of 2009. If this had been served blind I would certainly have guessed it was a Gewurztraminer.

Screwcap closure.

Purchased at $11.95 (Canadian).

Interesting note Bruce. I may try to find some of this; it sounds like it has real character.

The bitterness might be from the Muscat component.

Color is a dark straw but my lighting is suspect. On the nose I find some honeysuckle...."there has to be CB in here" from across the table. Floral, nectarine, peach, melon...all very inviting eh.
Medium-sweet, lots of tropical fruit. Fresh, crisp acidity, no spritz for me. Long length, hint of muscat for sure plus the bitterness. Spice adds to the pleasure. I get the lycee on reflection.
Bravo Charles Back!
