Laura and I enjoyed a mid-week dinner out with great friends, one of whom celebrated their 50th birthday yesterday. The wine selection was kept limited owing to the fact that both birthday girl and I have a major audit going on at work (really cuts down on the fun). That said, the choice were nonetheless very enjoyable.
2003 Pierre Gimonnet Champagne Paradoxe Brut
Perhaps Champagne handled 2003 better than everywhere else, as this is the second 2003 Champagne that I have really enjoyed in less than a week. The wine is focused and refreshing, with ample fruit and also a cleansing finish that invites sip after sip. Very fine.
2000 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Bosconia
Very aromatic with both fruit and evolved earthy elements. Light to medium bodied, easy to drink and very food friendly. This is not the most profound Lopez de Heredia, but it's delicious and somewhat more accessible than most.
