WTN: Great Western Cabernet

2000 Best's Cabernet Sauvignon Great Western Concongella Vineyard (Victoria, 'Straya)
13% alcohol, dark, clear ruby in colour and quite a striking aromatic profile. The only other wine I've smelled like this was a Wendouree Cabernet (that literally smelled like a chocolate mint cookie at one point); this is quite similar - dark chocolate, earth, fresh minty and eucalyptus notes giving it a high toned edge and sappy red fruits and plummy flavours, very polished and silky in the mouth with tannins mostly integrated but a nice spine of acid keeping it very fresh and light. Very enjoyable, balanced and refreshing, finishing long with each sip inviting another. Glad I opened this now as it's drinking really beautifully with bright youthful fruit and some nice developed notes.

I had a lovely bottle of the 1998 a few years ago - and wish it was more widely available. I do like this winery, not showy, just good.
