2008 Coudert Clos de Roilette Fleurie

by Jay Miller » Mon Mar 29, 2010 7:49 pm

Pale red, mossy nose with hints of cherry and dusty strawberries

Good acidity, some earth, a little fleshier than I expected. Grows more enchanting with air as the various components meld and smooth out and a subtle warm spiciness emerges. Going into it I was a little prejudiced against the wine as I decided to open it instead of a bottle of Pif and there was some resentment that it wasn't Clos Roche Blanche. But that's gone now. Really.

Speaking of Coudert when I was at La Sirene last week I spotted the horse peeking out of an ice bucket at the next table. I gifted them with the remaining 2001 Drouhin Chambolle and 1998 du Tertre since anyone drinking Coudert obviously knows what they're doing.

If one buys into the idea that Beaujolais is a good early Burgundy indicator and the vintages generalizations have any meaning at all I'm looking forward to the 2008 Burgundies.

Why would you resent that a Coudert was not a Clos Roche Blanche? Feeling nostalgia for plastic corks?

I always find it a bit uppity for any wine not to be Clos Roche Blanche.

Of course if all wine was Clos Roche Blanche then we would be bored to tears much quicker than you might think.

Sounds great. An annual buy for me, but thanks for added impetus.
Never thought about the idea of Beaujolais as harbinger for Cote d'Or, I'll ponder that.
Didn't know what spurred you to choose that table to donate wine to, but I was glad to see some off our table!

Jay,
Will be in Queens this weekend and will make my regular trip to CSW. Any hot "must buys"? Our palates are somewhat similar and am always looking for something good or interesting that I cannot get in the midwest.

I wouldn't push the idea too far. But, having said that, I use Brun's l'Ancien that way, among its other uses.

Well, they have some very good prices on some 1996 and 1997 Huet at the moment. If you're in the mood to splurge they also have what, all things considered, is a reasonable price for the 1945 but it's still very expensive.

The 2008 Selbach-Oster 'Rotlay' is a wine I'm sure I'll regret only buying 2 bottles of. Gonon, of course. Not a must buy but the 2007 Clos Roche Blanche Cot is an atypically early drinking version which is a lovely light styled wine with some air. 2009 Pepiere is wonderful though I hear the second bottling of it will be even better.

I'm sure there are lots more that just aren't coming to mind at the moment.
