WTN: Celebratory Riesling & Chave

by David M. Bueker » Fri Mar 12, 2010 3:46 pm

Board regular Salil Benegal had reason to celebrate (accepted into PhD program) & graciously invited me to participate in eating good food and drinking (mostly) good wine.

1996 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese
This suffered from 1996 disease, as it was lactic and harshly acidic/disjointed all at the same time. Not good, despite 13 years in the glacial cellar. Sometimes you cannot overcome the issues of the vintage.

On the other hand...

2001 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Spatlese
On opening this is like trying to eat a mountain. It's a mass of minerals that crushes the palate in an avalanche of boulders. Time in the glass brings out quite a lot of fruit, and the overall structure of the wine is excellent. This is a wine for rock-heads, and in that vein nearly perfect.

2004 Chave Hermitage
20 years too soon. This never stopped changing. At first it seemed bretty, but that went away, and the wine became floral and dark fruited. Then that went away, and I swear I smelled almond extract. It's tannic, it's dense, and yet the wine has an elegance that belies its brooding, angry young man stance. It's the wine equivalent of a chld between James Dean and Catherine Deneuve.

Congrats on grad school. Sorry we couldn't get together this week but my schedule is so hectic. So does this mean that Salil is leaving New England?

I don't remember what I drank when I got into grad school, but it definitely wasn't Chave.

Well he got into UCONN for PoliSci, so unless something better comes along he's here for the long haul.

Political science! I thought Salil was a finance guy. We'll have to have a talk about this. Over riesling of course...

Indeed, congrats to Salil.
I'm a big fan of Selbach Oster's 2001s, though all I have left are some Sonnenuhr one-starts and a lone Sclossberg Kab. :(

Not finance - economics (with a focus on growth, development and welfare with tie-ins to policymaking).

We'll have a talk about this soon for sure. Do need to pick your brains a bit on this topic.

As for the wines, can't add much more to David's comments. But that Chave, wow. (And yes, it may have been too soon, but it had so much to offer with a while in the decanter.)

Congratulations Salil.
Hopefully nothing that will impair your wine drinking opportunities

like trying to eat a mountain

Nice phrase, undoubtedly from your experience taking a stumble in the Canadian Rockies

Best,
Charles

No stumbles, but the odd taste or two.
