WTN: Ch de Coing de St Fiacre Muscadets 1996 & 2002

by Saina » Tue Aug 29, 2006 3:44 pm

  • 1996 Château du Coing de Saint Fiacre Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie Grande Cuvée Saint-Hilaire - France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine (8/29/2006)
The nose is almost Burgundian, oaky (? does this really see oak?), limes and minerals. The palate reminds me of Chablis: fine limpid fruit, no sign of oak, noticable acidity, minerals - long and delicious. The nose is also good if you don't think of it as Muscadet. The palate is lovely. My problem is that I wan't Muscadet to taste like Muscadet not Burgundy. So, this wine is a fair Burgundy! I believe this is the most recent vintage of this available.
  • 2002 Château du Coing de Saint Fiacre Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie L'Ancestrale - France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine (8/29/2006)
What a lovely Muscadet! The nose is citrussy, mineral and salty. The palate has moderately zippy acidity and fine fruit, is very fresh and mineral and the finish lasts forever. Lovely!

Drunk with assorted cheeses (Majorejo, 18 month old Gouda, Parmigiano reggiano with some months under it, can't remember how many but the oldest available here). Bloody brilliant stuff. Probably my 60th or so bottle of this going. Perfect drink for cheeses. 'Nuff said?

A new winery for me. Thanks Otto, seems could be big name in Europe from the website. Both Carre and Chereau families are mentioned. Cool.

Otto, regarding your oak in the muscadet...do you think it might just be that the wine lay on it's lees for an extra amount of time> I often thisk wines that do that show as if they have been on/in toasted oak.

I have tasted some wine from this producer before, including the 93 Sainte-Hilaire. It is old vines (more than 70 years old) and very long time aged on the lees. I liked it a lot. I even think there's a bottle or two left in my cellar. Have not tasted the 96 yet. Also a cuvee named Sainte-Hubert, which is old vines and a little shorter time on the lees is very good. There are notes in the archives on my homepage if you are interested.

They also have a version aged in new oak - it is named Chene neuf.

Yes, this is part of the Chéreau-Carré imperium and a big and well known name. It is even mentioned with glowing reports in J. Friedrich's Loire book! :)

The lees are the other thing I was thinking about. But as there was a prounounced "typical" leesiness to the wine also, I thought it would be something else. Also, on another forum I got the info that it is oaked. I don't know if its new or old, though.

Thanks Arnt, I'll go check out your page...
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

Ripe and juicy. Like many places in France. Think 03 heatwave with better acid. To cut to the chase and oversimplify.
