WTN: My favorite weird white wine

by Jim Grow » Sun Mar 07, 2010 11:20 pm

I recently picked up a few half bottles of the 2004 Bretz Siegreebe BA Bechtolshemer Sonnenberg for a mere $9 and had to try one tonight. I had not tasted this German varietal in many years but remember liking previous bottles in Auslese or above before. This dessert wine was %9.5 abv and no R.S. listed. The A.P. # was 4 258 027 004 07 so if my memory serves, it was not bottled until 2007? It seems strange to hold a wine that long before bottling but, whatever?
In any event this wine was much better than previous examples (they can be a bit sappy) from the same producer as this was excellent with spritzy acidity and a nose and palate of grapefruit and spicy peach with a med. straw color. Somewhat viscous, this wine finished so cleanly and with such nice acidity it was a joy to sip. I'll buy more if they still have some when next in Columbus ,Ohio. This varietal can be a "love it or leave it" wine to many people but I think few lovers of well-made sweet wines would object to it. No musty/skunky flavors at all!!

It could have been bottled but not submitted for an AP number until 2007. Likely waiting to clear inventory.

When you can get the Bretz wines at those kind of prices they are most definitely worth it!
