Magnotta Winery Tasting
March 3, 2010
Pinot Noir 2007
25% Ontario pinot, 75% Romania pinot
Clear ruby color. Nice pinot cherry nose with some earth. Midpalate was a bit tannic with some greenish and tart tannins and a barnyardy taste with some red fruit in the background. Short to medium finish. $8.50 Not really my style.
Gamay Noveau 2009
Ontario VQA
Dark ruby wine. Nice cherries, red raspberries and forest floor on the nose. Red fruit on the midpalate with light tannins and balancing acidity. A bit short on the finish.
$8.95. I liked this one, so I bought one.
Cabernet franc 2006
Ontario VQA
Medium to dark ruby wine. Nice earthy nose. Midpalate was nicely balanced with round tannins, good acidity and muted dark fruit. Medium length finish. Like most cab francs it just does not do much for me.
Baco Noir 2006
Ontario VQA
Dark garnet in color. Earthy nose with some spiciness. Midpalate somewhat weak with red fruit, nice acidity but the tannins were missing in action. Short to medium finish.
Special reserve dry riesling 2008
Ontario VQA
Straw yellow in color. Petrol and lemon on the nose. Midpalate was quite nice with steely acidity and lemon. Medium long finish. $12.95 A nice dry riesling, so I bought a bottle
Semidry riesling 2007
Ontario VQA Niagara peninsula
Pale yellow in color. Light nose of melons and a hint of petrol. Good midpalate feel of tingly acidity with light apricots and melons. Medium length finish of acidity and white peaches. $9.25 A good riesling for the price, so I bought a bottle.
Special reserve cabernet sauvignon 2007
Dark garnet red. Oaky nose with cassis undertones. Midpalate had nice smooth tannins with dark fruit and oak. Medium long finish. Oak needs time to integrate – 2 more years perhaps?
Riesling icewine 2003
VQA Ontario
Golden carmel color. Rich nose of melons. Rich midpalate of hazel nuts, lemon fruit, caramel with wonderful mouth watering acidity. Lots of layers of flavor and some secondary taste characteristics starting to develop in this 7-year-old wine. Long finish of acidic fruit.
$40, I bought two 375 ml bottles. This was easily the best wine of the tasting for me.
Vidal icewine 2007
VQA Ontario
Straw yellow color. Fruity nose of peaches and cream. Apricots and peaches on the midpalate with nice but somewhat light acidity. Medium to long finish. Fruity but light for an icewine.
