WTN: a really lovely Cornas

by Dale Williams » Sat Mar 06, 2010 10:37 am

Whole NY strips (short loins) were on sale, I got one and had it cut into 2" steaks. First time I've been able to use grill in a while (dug a path through snow to get there), plus I made asparagus and Betsy made orzo with spinach when she got it. I went downstairs for a Cabernet based wine, came back with a Syrah, the 1999 Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes. This is just drinking beautifully now. Sweet black cherries, gamey meat notes with some violet and tar. Sweet easy tannins mostly resolved. Cornas has a reputation for rusticity but this is more about elegance. Not a huge wine, but immensely satisfying, and I'm sorry it's my last one. A-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Hey, I brought a bottle of this during one of our tasting about 2 years ago. Thanks for the TN .... reminded me to consider putting my remaining bottle to good use soon.

Has anyone tried the 2003 Voge VV? I've been thinking maybe 2003 being so ripe and hot, I could broach it now.

Ramon, I had forgotten we had at the N/S Rhone event. I always liked this, but really showing well now. Voge also made a 99 CdR, out of young Cornas, that was a fabulous bargain.

Chaim, sorry, I didn't buy many 2003 N. Rhones, but I thought the few low to mid ones I had (Thalabert, Offerus) were going to be comparatively early drinking.

Thanks. This is the only 2003 N.Rhone I bought, so I have no basis for comparison.
