Notes from yesterday's lunch with Bodjie, Noel and Jojo at Pepato to try some of Bodjie's new wines from Singapore. Although Bodjie brought two wines, we ended up opening only one while the other bottle was provided by Noel.
Domaine du Comte Ligier Belair Vosne=Romanee 2007 - Pale, strawberry red. Meaty, leathery nose. Tart fruit, mostly dried cherries. Refreshing streak of acidity. Needs time to open up. Sweet fruit notes on the nose became apparent after about an hour in the glass. Not a complex wine but quite enjoyable.
Chateau Cantenac Brown 2000 - Very dark, unevolved color. Dusty nose. Lots of dried fruit. A little sweaty. Foursquare, structured and rather masculine Margaux. There was a lot of sediment in this but it seems it could use a few more years.
After the rather restrained lunch (for our group, anyway) Jojo invited us to The Cage for a few more drinks.
Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2001 - Gently sweet fruit. The oak is very well integrated with the wine with just a hint of it showing on the still firm finish. Good complexity here with spicy wood, tobacco and caramel. There's also a brightness to this wine provided by a good dose of acidity. Very good but could use just a little more age to round it out.
Chateau Langoa Barton 1996 - Rich, bacon fat nose. Despite that, I found it rather lean on the palate. Easy to drink. This later developed a bit of a rubbery character I associate with South African wines which I thought was a bit odd. Still, a good bottle.
