WTN: 2002 Corison Cabernet Sauvignon

by Diane (Long Island) » Mon Mar 01, 2010 6:22 pm

I've been a fan of Cathy Corison's wines for quite a few years, and usually include a stop at her winery on our Napa trips.

Very pretty nose of black cherries, roasted meat and herbs. More cherries on the palate with the addition of rose petals. Tannins are soft and the midpalate is rich and beautiful, but the finish fades a little too quickly. Still, it is a lovely wine that was enjoyed with a wedge of iceberg lettuce and a killer blue cheese and bacon dressing, followed by thick, rare steaks.

I love Cathy's wines but don't think I have ever opened one at under 10 years of age. Heck the 1994 (from magnum) that I opened last year could have easily waited another 5 or more years and the 1997 are lovely now. The 1999 I have not liked as much as the 1994 and 1997 but it could just be that it needs a couple more years. The 1999 Long Meadow Ranch however is really wonderful right now.

I liked the way the 2002 is drinking now, and I plan to open another next month. I do have 1 bottle of the 1995 left that I should probably think about drinking soon.

I had the good fortune of stopping and tasting the Corison linup on Feb 6th and was very impressed. I made the mistake of not buying any, however, worriesd that I was buying too much wine on this trip. I think I will remedy that in the near furure.
As we were tasting the wines, another winemaker, Phil Robbins, came in to barrel sample some of his wines that he is storing there. He was kind enough to allow my brother and me to participate. All in all a really nice experience.

The 2001 Kronos Vineyard was one of the best Cabs I have ever tasted. Unfortunately, Cathy Corrison also recognizes this and I can't afford to buy any of the (dwindling) supply at the winery.
