WTN: 2004 ESJ Rocks and Gravel

by Bill Buitenhuys » Wed Feb 24, 2010 5:00 pm

2004 Edmunds St. John Rocks and Gravel (CA) I finally succumbed to the cellar whispers and opened one of these. Give this an hour of airtime and the result is brambly, earthy, sweet dark cherry that is bright and youthful with a syrah dominant smoky, meaty finish. This wine has plenty of fruit and supple structure to age for years but is very accessible now.

Nice. I have some lurking, but not really sure where. That's likely a good thing.

Any idea why no releases of this wine after 2005?

For 2006 and 2007 (so far) the Old Black Magic replaced Rocks & Gravel. It's pretty similar in style. I have read that R&G comes back for 2009.

Thanks, I had my first bottle of this (2005) a few nights ago and enjoyed it quite a bit.

That 2005 is my favorite R&G since the 2001. Problem is, I liked it so much I drank it all. Just one bottle left to age. :(
