WTN: Periquita 2006

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Feb 19, 2010 9:40 am

Terras do Sado (Portugal)
Jose Maria Da Fonseca

A blend of Trincadeira, Tinta Roriz and Castelão

Light cherry red in the glass.

Spicy, raspberry, cranberry and red licorice on the nose.

Medium weight, very tangy, cranberry, raspberry, cherry, spicy, cinnamon, a hint of barnyard, some alcohol heat, quite refreshing.

The extreme tanginess did seem to calm down a bit with time, or perhaps I just became accustomed to it.

Tangy, drying and mouthwatering on the finish.

This was a wine that my wife and I drank quite frequently back in the early days of our wine adventures and it was interesting to go back and try it again.

Purchased at $7.95 (Canadian).

Ah yes, revisiting oenological roots can be fun. It is often a case of "What did we ever see in THAT?", but just as often for me, "Hey, that isn't all that bad!"

I have revisited Vino Verde (Casal Garcia) and Mateus etc. with decent results.

The Perequita falls into the category of what we used to call 'Dirty Dago Red', more for alliteration than geographic accuracy, and we would consume quantities of it, Egri Bikaver and Torres Sangre de Toro with late night pizzas.

I had a bottle of Perequita awhile ago and while it seemed a tad rougher than memory would have it, the wine was pretty serviceable. I think they also used to sell a reserve wine, but can't recall for sure. The regular is $9,99 in BC (gag)

Or locally, Prince of Denmark cherry wine, a horrid sweet concoction that was popular at parties back in the day (I don't recall ever tasting it myself)
