WTN: 2 good wines- Rheingau and Savigny les Beaune

by Dale Williams » Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:33 am

Over several nights, the 2008 Leitz Rudesheimer Klosterlay Kabinett. First night a hint of spritz, sweet limeade fruit, full and refreshing. Calmer on subsequent nights, good length, a minty/herbal note with the citrus fruit, I'm pleased. B+

A cold was wearing down Betsy on Valentine's Day, but she printed a recipe for a chorizo/mushroom pizza from a Jacques Pepin show. I was going to do that for dinner, then Dave said he was joining us so I also did an anchovy/veggie pie. I opened the 2005 Potel Savigny VV. Dense, good acids, some slightly raggedy tannins. Solid/stolid black cherry fruit. OK, but I'm not loving this. However, a couple of hours made all the difference. With air this shows sweeter fruit on revisit, with damp earth, smoke, and a little spice. Will give other bottle some time. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Opening 2005 Burg? I'm shocked it was not totally shut down. Of course the couple of hours of air comment indicate it's not far from that.

Love those 2008 Leitz wines.

I wouldn't open a "serious" 2005 now, but I thought it was worth trying a village Savigny. With $20-30 wines where I have more than one it doesn't scare me that I wasted one if it's not in a good place (probably better than cellaring for several years without knowing).
I liked this 2008 Leitz, but I did the 07 of this also.

They don't sell that one down here Bob. I did manage to get a mixed case of 2008 Leitz kab/spat, so life is good.

I would recommend you try one of the generic kab though (if you have not already).

Just as an fyi, Josie Leitz will be present at Chambers Street Wines in NYC for an in-store tastings of his 2008s and some 2009s. Feb 17, 5 pm - 7 pm.
I'm not affiliated with Chambers, but merely a customer that happens to receive email offers and events from them.
