I invited my parents for a pre-V Day dinner at the new Oakroom restaurant at the Oakwood in Ortigas Center. The restaurant is very elegant and quiet. The staff is well trained in restaurant service but also in wine service. The glasses used are Schott and corkage is waived for up to two bottles per person on Saturday and Sunday nights! The food may not be cutting edge but it's good, with rather generous portions. Prices aren't too bad either.
I took this opportunity to try one of the wines currently on sale at Bacchus to see if it's worth getting a few more bottles.
Huet Vouvray Le Mont Demi sec 2003 - I've read that 2003 is a great year for sweet wines from the Loire so I just had to give this a try. Candied ginger and lemon peel. Slightly nutty. Subtle orange blossom honey. Gentle sweetness. Well balanced. Lovely and elegant. Excellent. Not so sweet that you couldn't enjoy it with dinner. Definitely worth getting a couple more bottles of this at P 1540.00.
After some pate and salad with the Huet we moved on to a red.
Kaesler WOMS 2004 - This is a Cabernet-Shiraz blend from the Barossa. WOMS stands for Wine Of Mass Seduction so I thought it would be appropriate for V-Day. Decanted about an hour. Very rich, thick Turkish coffee. Sweet and spicy. The oak is completely integrated. Rounded and ready. I'm not sure if this will continue to develop. My feeling is it's probably at peak now. Waiting further might just turn this wine flabby as it's already getting soft. Very good.
