WTN: Ridge Zin Caboose ATP '06...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Feb 11, 2010 4:44 pm

Tried this new ATP release the other night for dinner:
1. Ridge Calif Zin Caboose NervoVnyd/SonomaCnty (4% PS; 14.9%; 49 brls; Bttld: March'08; Drk: 1/08-1/13-1/15: EB) 2006: Med.dark color; some bright/raspberry/Zin bit earthy light pencilly/vanilla/oak light licorice/smokey/spicy pleasant/interesting nose; fairly tart bit lean/hard spicy/raspberry/Zin/earthy light vanilla/pencilly/oak some tannic flavor; med.long some tannic/hard/lean/tight pleasant raspberry/Zin/spicy/earthy some vanilla/oak finish; needs several yrs of age; rather hard/lean like most of the Ridge '06 ATP Zins; lacks the lush/opulent fruit of the Ridge '07's; probably will get a lot better w/ age but nothing to write home about now; not a bad wine but just sort of undistinguished now; the ATP wines have a way of (often) improving dramatically, but hard to see that potential in this wine. $28.00

Is being in the Ridge ATP Club like being in a surprise-of-the-month club? Being one who is willing to endure some disappointments in exchange for the odd rare ectasy, the reports you and others provide always make me feel like I'm missing out on a grand opportunity.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Jenise,
The Ridge ATP wines are typically made in 1,000 case lots. I'm a big Ridge fan and don't want to miss out on anything.
But I'd have to say that it's pretty rare that I hit an ATP release that knocks my sox off. Ridge puts their best efforts into
their regular releases. That said, though, the ATP releases often seem to be underwhelming upon release but have an
uncanny ability to rise up and bite you on the derriere with some age.
