WTN: Pinon Brut, Termes, Joguet, Txakolina

N.V. François Pinon Vouvray Brut (Loire) L06252 Slightly funky but oh so intoxicating with lemony wooliness. Aggressive bead, slightly round in the middle, lots of waxy lemon, and well delineated crispness. $18? back up the truck.

2000 Bodega Numanthia Termes Toro Termes (Castilla y León) Over ripe, over oaked, glossy, unctuous, and dense. I should have saved this for Joe Perry. :p

2005 Charles Joguet Chinon Les Petites Roches (Loire) I really need to remember to decant this half bottle next time. Very tight at first but opens to lots of dark fruits, ripe but not overly so, gritty, minerally, and standing right up to hearty mushroom, root veg, and beef stew. 3 C

2007 Txomin Etxaniz Getariako Txakolina (País Vasco) All grapefruit SweeTart with verve o plenty. This cries for food and then shows lovely balance with super cleansing acidity.

Bill
I picked up a bottle of the Pinon recently - I'll try and remember to post a note here (or at least on the forum) when we crack it.

Had the Numanthia around a while Bill? I just can't see you actually buying it.

I think so Bob. It takes some coaxing to get it to open up and it's chock full of fruit and structure.

Ya, I bought this back in my pointy days. Still have a bunch of Aussie's from that era that have re-classified from "cherished" to "the syrah aging experiment".

Numanthia is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm not a big fan of the many of the inky black Spanish wines hyped by RMP/JM that I've had, but I have enjoyed a handful of the Numanthias (remember really liking the '01 and '04 a couple of years ago). Those aren't wines I would go out and buy on my own - but a couple of years ago a very generous friend in Chicago put together a full vertical of Numanthia (with a couple of Termanthias) from his cellar, and I was surprised by how much I really enjoyed a lot of the wines, and how well structured a few of them really were.

Bill, out of curiosity, which Aussies?

Salil, that Numanthia is the entry level one (~$20).

Aussie...Ohh, I'm under a case now, whew. :D A few from Groom, Greg Norman, Leeuwin, Moss Bro, Kaesler.

Ah, mea culpa - saw Numanthia and immediately connected it with the 'flagship' (in the upper 50s/60s), which also has 'Numanthia Toro Termes' on the label. Sigh. Why can't some of these Spanish labels be as informative and transparent as the German ones?
But more in agreement then, as I've only had one or two Termes (all at retailer tastings) and didn't like them much.

I quite enjoy the wines from Leeuwin and Moss Wood (who make some incredibly structured Cabs), would not put either in the Parkerized category.

Oh, I agree with you regarding Moss Wood and Leeuwin, for sure. Western Oz is the way to go for me these days.
