WTN: Catching up while laying low Pt. 1 (Baumard)

by David M. Bueker » Tue Feb 09, 2010 1:10 pm

I've fallen behind in notes a bit lately. Unfortunately also gotten a bug, so it's not a bad time to catch up.

Fred Ek came to Table & Vine for a tasting, and we tried 5 wines from Domaine des Baumard.

N.V. Domaine des Baumard Crémant de Loire Carte Turquoise
Very crisp and clean and a bit grassy. Quite refreshing if a bit simple. Not bad value at $18.

2005 Domaine des Baumard Savennieres
Simultaneously chalky and creamy - some finishing spice and very fine acidity.

N.V. Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon La Cuvée Ancienne
Spicy, nutty & not too sweet. This blend goes back into the '60s, but as a whole tastes like something from the late '80s. Nice and at $20 good value for a wine with aged Chenin character.

2007 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume
Fantastic balance. A sweet wine that has verve and finishing clarity. While the value is not what it once was that does not mean it's not a value now, just that it was much more fun to buy when it was $30 a bottle instead of $50.

2005 Domaine des Baumard Anjou Logis de la Giraudière
Quite grapey at this young stage. It's spicy, though perhaps a bit more green than I might care for. Reminds me a bit of 2004 Beaujolais in its blend of red fruit and green elements.

Sorry about the bug, David. My cough, that lasted about three weeks starting back in December, is seemingly back again although not as bad as before.
Fred Ek deserves a reward for chivalry in my book. I'm quite sure he is the presenter from a wine tasting in a private home on Nantucket who gave me a ride in the rain back to the inn where I was staying after my pre-arranged transport failed to show. (That BTW was a tasting of Montrachet and Corton Charlemagne as I recall.)

I really enjoyed meeting and talking with Fred. He and I had a lengthy conversation after the tasting, and he was both engaging and informative.

At least you stayed far away from Middletown. Damn, what a disaster.

Laura and I have friends who used to live in Middletown. They were close enough that the blast might have busted some windows.

"While laying low".
David I thought maybe your in-house probation officer was on the "I have to check out this guy" list.
