Sauvignon in Condrieu?!

by Tony Fletcher » Sun Feb 07, 2010 8:15 pm

I'm in the midst of enjoying a 1999 St.-Cosme Gigondas and visited the web site to learn even more about the estate (one I already know well and love). DEcided to click on the link to the 2007 Condrieu (for which St.-Cosme acts as a negociant) and was astounded to find that the wine claims to be only 60% Viognier with 40% Sauvignon Blanc. Surely COndrieu is required to be 100% Viognier? Or has something changed while I haven't been looking? And if Condrieu is still meant to be 100% Viognier, how is St.-Cosme getting away with it?
You can get to the wine-maker's info on the COndrieu from this page:

Cheers all

I always thought, as you did, that Condrieu had to be 100% viognier. All the references I've been able to find on the Web and elsewhere back this up. Either it's a misprint on the St.-Cosme website, or the appellation authorities have been asleep at the switch.

It also says something about the Viognier having been planted in Minervois. Very confusing. Maybe Luis was drunk when he wrote it?
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

There seems to be a technical error, the information is intended for Little James NV, a wine they produce in the Midi. All Condrieu is indeed 100% Viognier.

Thanks Fredrik

You have to admit, that's quite a serious technical error! I simply couldn't believe that anyone would get away with mixing SB in to a Condrieu - and announcing it. The technical error can join the quiet hilariously bad English translations...

Now, hopefully to write a tasting note on that beautiful Gigondas of theirs.
