Hannu,

Do you ever report on more distinctive wines? I cannot help but notice that you create some stunning images, but that the wines are completely unworthy of them.

Hannu,

I mention it because you seem more interested in driving traffic to your own site and/or antagonizing members of this forum (e.g. your response to Ryan) that are contributing in a positive way here.

Just my thoughts based on your first few posts back. Sorry to be honest and spoil your evening, but it's the truth.

David,

You are indeed "stunningly accurate". Can posts that don't fit in the wine forum be moved to "Friends and Fun", or elsewhere?

It will be most interesting to convey this message to e.g. Andreas Dourakis, the winemaker and vinyard owner in Crete whose Syrah is one of the "reports" I've posted. I'm sure that my friend Andreas, with whom I've had a joyous moment browsing through my wine photos, is highly pleased. But you must be an undisputed authority on Greek wines?

Continued below this Dourakis picture :D

Image

When, about 10 years ago, I entered WLP and WLDG, and got in contact with Robin Garr, this site was bursting with innovation, welcoming people with an open-minded interest in wine. I thank Robin for the encouragement he gave to my way of presenting wine to people, to making wine a more everyday experience with a little twist.

Today, I'm unhappy to say, WLDG is a "boring" listing of WTNs. I'm sure it is not Robin's fault. It's just that I've been away too long  Or, speaking seriously, the site has been invaded by people who are absolutely too SERIOUS about wine. You sniffers, fine-sippers, have lost your culture. Wine is about Dionysos! It's fun! Loosen up a bit! Wine is not fun when in a mind that works like a tick-tack-clock and measures it in engineering-like terms. (Well, ofcourse I'm exaggerating  but only on the point about an engineer's mind.) Fine wine is fine, but...

It is symptomatic that the most emotionally involved discussion going on in WLDG right now is the topic "Tim Hanni "dismisses" wine critique ". I admire Tim's zeal to extrapolate his views with argumentation.

Unfortunately I'm more interested in doing my wine art than having lengthy, fruitless (as I find them from the reception my posts have received) discussions with 'adversaries'.

Following Sam Platt's advice, concurring with your views David,

Sam Platt wrote:Can posts that don't fit in the wine forum be moved to "Friends and Fun", or elsewhere?

I am happy to return to my work with wine as art and experience.

 "I think you too serious, Sir.
I like not serious.
Makes unhappy if serious"

Now, here comes the really unworthy wine in a picture :D

Hannu,

I was referrring to the reports that you have posted here so far. I do not have time right now to read all of your reports. Unfortunately your combative discussion style has not given me incentive to do so.

If tasting notes & our experiences about wine are boring to you then perhaps this isn't the right web site for your participation.

That's automatically generated by our software, Hannu. Every certain number of posts, it changes.

As for your history of WLDG: ten years ago there were just a couple international internet wine boards. Now there's a zillion. And there's Facebook. And Twitter. Social media has expanded hugely and the number of players at any given portal has thinned out dramatically. As for the "boring list of TNs", I'm really sorry you feel that way but it's the core of what we do and most of us find it interesting to read about other's wine experiences and compare notes on wines we've tasted, own or hope to. You don't have to participate in that, but it's kind of tacky to come to Robin's party and then complain that all his guests are boring. Just saying.

I would like to tell you Sir that I spend quite a lot of money to taste wines on this forum. I buy them especially to participate. My notes might not be up to your exceptional talent but I resent your comment above. Please reply.

Though I belive in dialectical-materialism and in its law of quantity becoming quality, I would nevertheless prefer being called 'Cellar rat'. Is it possible to delete posts, so that I can regain my preferred status? And thinking about that, wouldn't it be just fine for all?

I love Robin's personal party in his '30 sec...'. He's still taking a broad view, as always.

I'm taking David's plea: I really haven't had the time to read all your notes. I promise I will work on them later. (Perhaps not all the thousands, though.)
You are also welcome to become aquainted with my wine pages. The link is in my signature.

But may I say this: I buy wine to dine and drink with friends face-to-face. And the, what you called, 'exceptional talent' is simply the fact that I'm a photographer in love with wine. And I believe that wine is a visual and storytelling thing. Has always been since the times of ancient Greece.

Hannu, Hello....

I have seen some of your photographs and many are, in their way, stunning and thought-provoking. Have you considered the possibility that your use of words is equally stunning, but not in the way that will warm the hearts or minds of those reading them? A bit of gentility on your part might make our reactions to you considerably more warm.

Thanks, Rogov.

May I presume that when you are writing about my use of words you refer to my posts here? I would hardly think you refer to the texts in my wine pages.

It is truly annoying to have to admit having an artist's temperament in reaction when e.g. David writes back to me in the insulting way he does. I should, ofcourse, honor his view that my choices of subjects, the wines, are so much below his standard. And just let it be.

So Hannu, perhaps we have a language usage/understanding issue here. I was complimenting yor efforts in photographic manipulation. But wines like Dancing Bull just seem to be of lower quality than your images. I find your photos worthy of much more exalted wines, and also in general we don't discuss a lot of branded/generic/lower end/mass market wine here.

But then I would also have to admit a deeper disagreement about how wine, in my opinion, is to be enjoyed.

One of the mottos I have on my wine pages is: "Avidly testing reasonably priced wine with a view and a vision in mind." Perhaps it should be clarified with notions about wine being empty if consumed, tasted for the reason of giving points, aside from the experience enjoying it with friends.

I'm not sure if this clarifies :)

Ok. You are from the U.S. of America, aren't you? Perhaps you have your broad views when it comes to U.S. wines. Welcome to Finland, where it is quite exceptional/exotic to even have your wines, considering e.g. France where your zin is propably spitted on, being it even the finest California gives. Ofcourse there are many U.S. wines here, but some are visually interesting. - Get my point?

I probably shouldn't wade into this, but...

If Hannu finds the folks around here too focused on status and points then that is a mischaracterization, IMO. There are other boards where that might apply but I always thought of WLDG as pretty down-to-earth and interested in exploring what all kinds of wines have to offer.

But, it is true that this is not the place for wines that are best used in convivial circumstances with no attention to the artistry of the wine. And if Hannu wants to enjoy wine only as lubrication for a party atmosphere, then why even bother coming to a geeky discussion board in the first place?

David,
Considering the cultural difference we have I would like you to give some credit to me for doing a nice thing to a U.S. wine here (even if it is unpalatable to you). It has taken me years to give any notice to U.S. wines since my boycott of them because of Bushes and Iraq.
