Hart Cellars 2007 Riesling

Tasted from the group of six wines generously provided by Howie Hart as part of the Haiti raffle. If this wine was the only prize it still would have been overly generous for the amount donated.

Let me say up front that Howie's Riesling is by far the best home made wine I have ever tasted. This wine could easily standup up to many high price point commercial offerings. It was just a wonderful wine.

Color: Very pale yellow.

Nose: Powerful nose of melon, honey, and just a whiff of petrol.

Taste: Citrus fruit, pineapple, honey, and maybe a touch of mint. Very sharp acidity that balances the sugar quite nicely. Lively fruit with a spritzy quality on the tongue. Moderate finish with what seemed to be tinged licorice and cocoa.

Howie's 2007 Riesling is a delight, as exhibited by the bottle half-life of approximate one hour between three drinker. I am feeling quite superior today, since most of you will never get a chance to tast this wine, and will have to experience it vicariously through me!

My thanks again to Howie for his extreme generousity.
Sam

It is not only one of best homemade Rieslings, but one of the best period IMHO.

Howie should be working in the vineyards. He knows his way around grapes.

Have to agree. Howie's wines are first-rate, whether you consider them as "homemade" or not.

Glad you enjoyed it Sam. In all fairness, the wine reflects an excellent growing year in the area and I'm indebted to the source of the grapes in Niagara-On-The Lake, Ont. In fact, if you try almost any wine from Niagara through the Finger Lakes from 2007, you will find some very good stuff (too bad my Cab Franc from that year is all gone :( ). "Good grapes make good wine" is a quote from the first book I bought on home wine making, and it certainly applies.

I’ll have to agree with Mike and James; Howie definitely knows what he is doing! Wasn’t the 2007 Cab Franc a blend of 67% Franc and 33% Merlot? Masterfully blended Howie, excellent wine!

Yes, Victor. At this point I must confess to being lazy lately. Between mid-December and through the holidays I had many excellent wines with lots of folks and neglected to post WTNs. These include a nice dinner with Mike Conner in Knoxville and another nice dinner in Cincinnati with Mike Hughes and Julia. With Christmas Eve lasagna dinner I opened Victor's Barbera - an excellent match - very aromatic, good tannins and acidity and my sons loved it too.
