WTN: Eiswein without a face

by David M. Bueker » Sat Feb 06, 2010 5:14 pm

I said I was going to do it...

1998 Weingut Ernst Bretz Bechtolsheimer Homberg Riesling Eiswein
I discovered a bottle of this lurking in the cellar a few weeks ago. I was surprised as I thought I had consumed all of the bottles I had when they were quite young. Well that will teach me to lose bargain Eiswein in the cellar...

This has turned distinctly caramelly, and surely there was botrytis, as the dried fig & apricot aromas and flavors are all over this. It needs acidity, as it's somewhat goopy sweet, and reminds me of an alcoholic treacle more than anything else. Weird stuff. It was fun when it was young, but not so much anymore.

David
I recall you've posted before about drinking Eiswein in the flush of youth - with this appearing to be a valid support of the argument for doing so!

Oops.
Looks like my last taste of this was 12/05 and I have a few left. I guess my hope was that it would act like a BA rather than an Eiswein, albeit low end.

Appropriately sweet with luscious, peach and apricot, enough acid to balance. Finish with some burnt sugar. Less focused than expected for Eiswein, and seems botrytis-effected, so really more like a BA than an Eiswein. Nonetheless, enjoyable and good QPR at $13 paid.
