WTN: Burgundies

Notes from the weekly tasting at The Straits Wine Company. The focus this week was Burgundy.

I arrived quite early and was given a glass of Bird in Hand Shiraz 2007 - From Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia. Slight sulfur stink. Sweet and ripe with just a pinch too much oak for my taste. Medium-bodied and quite well-balanced. Good anDecent enough d a decent price at P 1065.00.

To prime our palates we shifted to a white. Mount Vernon Sauvignon Blanc 2008 - From Marlborough, NZ. Green pepper nose but quite fruity flavor. A little bitter in the finish. Decent enough at P 800.00+

We then went to the tasting proper. 6 wines, 2 of which were served blind.

Chanson Haut Cotes de Beaune 2007 - Light smoke on the nose. Rather watery and insubstantial but firm and tannic on the finish. I didn't like this. P 1320.00.

Domaine Cornu Pernand-Vergelesses 2006 - Sweet nose. Some candy. Very attractive. On the palate, sour cherry and unripe strawberry. Tannic. Smells better than it tastes. Not my type. P 1399.00.

Domaine Prieure Roch Nuits 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes 2006 - Actually a Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru. Ripe cherries on the nose. Very tannic and dry. Elegant, stately. It's never sweet but you get the impression of sweetness on the finish. Tight. This has a lot of potential and probably needs at least another 5 years in bottle to open up. Shows great length. Excellent but a frightful price at P 7423.00. The owner of this Domaine is related to one of the families which owns DRC.

Mischief and Mayhem Chambolle Musigny 2006 - The Burgundy project of Oz wine maker Michael Twelftree and a British partner. Sweet nose. A little bit of mint. Tobacco smoke. Quite complex. Soft compared to the other wines. Good fruit. Very good and ready to drink now. My WOTN. P 3693.00.

Next came 2 wines served blind.

Wine A - Muted nose but good fruit on the palate. Young but the tannins aren't too strong. Warm and juicy. Very good. Louis Lequin Santenay Les Charmes 2005. P 1912.00.

Wine B - Caramel on the nose; a bit New Worldy. Good fruit. A little spicy. Long finish. Open for business and very good now. Cacheux Vosne Romanee Les Chalandins 2006.

Aside from the first two Burgundies, the wines were pretty good. Looking forward to more tastings from this store.

Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
