WTN: 2008 Van Volxem Saar Riesling Alte Reben

by Salil » Wed Feb 03, 2010 9:23 pm

This may be my new favourite dry Riesling value. $26 from Crush Wines, 12% alcohol and really delicious with bright citrus, pear, talc and floral elements over a backbone of steely minerals. There's a faint touch of sweetness on the back end (I'd guess in terms of residual sugar this is probably halbtrocken) with the richness and extract I find in most of the Van Volxem Rieslings, fantastic acidity that keeps it very light on its feet and serious length. This is rich enough to be really enjoyable on its own (not something I find to often be the case with a lot of drier-styled Rieslings) and really good with food as well. After tasting this and the Wawerner Goldberg Riesling from Van Volxem, I'm really glad to be sitting on a decent number of his 08s.

Yummy. If I didn't still have some Selbach-Oster in my glass I would be rather jealous.
