WTN: 1985 claret at Mortons, plus mystery Saar, CA, 82 Bdx

by Dale Williams » Wed Feb 03, 2010 10:57 am

Last night Matt organized a 1985 Bordeaux horizontal at Morton's in midtown. I was looking forward to this as a fan of '85, but still was amazed how well these showed overall. Incredibly solid lineup, even though many aren't the pricier wines of the vintage.

Morton’s is great for me location-wise (6 minute walk to Grand Central),. and certainly the meat works well with Bordeaux. The issue is always the appetizers, none very red friendly, so I just went ahead with scallops in bacon (scallop, water, bacon, wine- rinse and repeat). Since I had just had steak at Pratt's Sunday I went with lamb chops- ok, but bone in filet for me next time. Waitstaff was attentive and generous with stems, though I thought John was going to have a coronary watching them tilt and twist bottles on opening (a couple of wines were double-decanted in advance, but this time I had no time between work and train to do the Talbot and Gruaud).

We started with a mystery wine, even though it was not blind. I had recently acquired cheaply a bottle of Zilliken that was believed to be 1990, but had no vintage, pradikat, AP # , or vineyard on label. Just the Zilliken Forstmiester Geltz name/emblem, old Skurnik import strip, nothing else. When I removed capsule it seemed to be real lead, which makes a little older than 1990 likely. Wine was mature but quite alive, softer acids, peachy fruit, some slately minerality. I'd guess Spatlese based on sweetness, obviously from a softer vintage.. John thought maybe it was something like an 82, and maybe from a vineyard other than Rausch, as it lacked a bit of grip. Enjoyable wine, and fun way to drink blind with the label showing. B

On to the reds. A really solid showing, and I'm probably grading a little tougher than usual, to provide gradation in a tight field.

Flight 1
1985 Talbot (St Julien)
Surprise of the night. A solid Cordier funk on opening, but more horsey than horsedung. Open and ready, a strong iron filing note and some tobacco, good length. Classic ripe St Julien, and just edged the Poyferre for me this night. A-

1985 Leoville Poyferre (St Julien)
Real earthy notes on nose, sweet cassis fruit, good acids, tannins still present but smooth. Nice length. Nice wine with a future. While I preferred the Talbot side by side, in 10 years I think this would rule. A-

Flight 2
1985 Gruaud Larose (St Julien)
Minty/herby, just a bit of barnyard, black currants and plums. Really a nice wine, though maybe a bit rough/blocky compared to its immediate predecessors. B+

1985 Ducru Beaucaillou (St Julien)
Earth and mushrooms, slightly stewed edge to the black fruits, with a little musty note that I didn't think was TCA. This was a recent acquistion, and consensus was it had seen some warmth at some point. NR

Ben's Mystery Wine #1
Nice wine, soft acids, some wood tannins, cassis with spice and cedar.
Guesses were all over the place, though solidly centered on Bdx varietals. We had guesses of Left and Right Bank, Tuscany, etc. My guess was 1983 Margaux AC, but it was actually the 1982 Grand Puy Lacoste. B+/A-

Flight 3
1985 Lafite-Rothschild (Pauillac)
Much more open than a bottle John served a couple years ago, though still a little tight. Black currants, lead pencil, cigarbox, powerful and elegant. Very long finish. A-/A

1985 Lynch Bages (Pauillac)
Full and ripe and exotic, really giving and open wine. Dark fruits, spice, a little saddle leather and coffee. A-/B+

Flight 4
1985 Canon (St Emilion)
I was alone in finding it my WOTN, but I just loved this. Heady mix of red and black fruits, wonderfully balanced acids and tannins, fresh, herbal, long. A/A-

1985 L’Evangile (Pomerol)
Minty/eucalyptus notes (a bit of a theme for the evening), soft, lush. Really quite a nice wine that I would love to have on my table, but slightly overshadowed by some of the others that were showing more structure and grip. B/B+

Ben's Mystery Wine #2
There was a funny caramelly note to the nose here, less apparent on palate, but somewhat clipped. He said he got at auction, and the guess was a little heat sometime along the way. 1986 Montelena

2001 Coutet (Barsac)
Apricot, peaches, and toffee. This is softer than I expected. I always think of 01 Sauternes as being a great combination of powerful fruit and zippy acids, this has the former but not the latter. Softest acidity of any 01 Sauternes I remember. Not a bad drink by any means, but less lively. B

Really excellent evening, with nice group and an amazingly consistent lineup of wines. Special thanks to Matt for organizing. Other than the couple that showed provenance issues, any wine last night could have easily stood proudly as the centerpiece of a dinner. Viva la '85!

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Thanks for those notes Dale. Do you see many of the '85s still holding on and drinking well for another decade or so? I'll have to keep those in mind if I'm ever out hunting for some birthyear Bdx. ;)

Good notes Dale. Thanks.
Here are my $0.02:

Bordeaux 1985 Tasting
Morton’s Steakhouse, NYC

Based on the group’s conversation, the 1985 vintage appears to be one that is relatively less-than popular, in terms of current and past availability, plus what I perceive as less number of enthusiasts that had tasted robust number of wines from this vintage. I had previously tasted very few and am pleasantly surprised that the wines, while not blockbusters, are solid, well made, with that nice level of austerity.

German starter
I came in later than everybody and was immediately poured the wine by a wait staff. I can’t see where the empty bottle went and when I asked, I was told that other than the producer, there was no other information on the label. Anyway, the wine was gold tinted, citrusy, hint of orange, brown sugar, rich and big in the mouth. It had a long finish and was quite good. B+

The reds:

1985 Ch. Leoville Poyferre, Saint-Julien
Subtle mineral, leather and earth on the nose. Mature in an elegant way, slight vegetal notes, evolved tannin, hint of austerity, classic. Medium finish. Better showing than a previous bottle a year ago. B+

1985 Ch. Talbot, Saint-Julien
Leaf, herb, slight funkiness on the nose. Tasted of kirsch, sweet red fruit, high acidity, tasty long finish. Group’s 2nd WOTN. B+

1985 Ch. Gruaud Larose, Saint-Julien
Another earthy and mineral nose with slight rubber and some cow poop. Oak.
Just like its Cordiere counterpart from the previous flight, this wine was sweet, full-bodied, with layers of black and blue fruit. I like the balance. My WOTN and group’s 4th. A-

1985 Ch. Ducru Beaucaillou, Saint-Julien
Oak and herb on the nose. Austere, very thin, vegetal, short finish. I think that this is an off-bottle. C

Blind bottle #1: 1982 Ch. Grand Puy Lacoste, Pauillac
Sweet floral nose with some earthy components. Ripe, rich, soft and smooth, with evolve fine tannin. Chewy portions. I thought that this was an ‘82 or a ‘90 Bordeaux. Very good and thanks to Ben. A-

1985 Ch. Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac
Pencil, wood, and appealing confection on the nose. Silky, very elegant, easy-drinking, developed weight and complexity with air time. Tightly structured. The group’s WOTN, my #2. A-

1985 Ch. Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Another unmistakable Pauillac nose with pencil eraser, sweet fruit, gravel, tobacco. Red fruit, medium-bodied, good acidity. Nicely balanced and complex, with smooth finish. A good wine. Group’s 3rd place WOTN. A-

1985 Ch. Canon, Saint-Emilion
Evolved secondary nose, lovely aromatics, floral, sexy.
Sweet but not cloying, good acidity, red and black fruit. Long and tasty finish. A-

1985 Ch. L’Evangile, Pomerol
Bouquet includes cigar, wet leaves and confection. High acidity, lean fruit, rounded, and sweet. B

Blind #2: Ch. Montelena, Napa Valley
Leaves, oak on the nose. Ripe, peppery, gobs of fruit. Long tart finish. My very general guess was a non-Bordeaux. B-

2001 Ch. Coutet, Barsac
Wood, great aromatics, but still raisiny and syrupy. Thick. Needs time. B

A nice dinner with great company and some good, mature wines. I had a very good bowl of Lobster Bisque, followed by an excellent cut of Boned-in Filet Mignon. I don’t frequent steakhouses, as I prefer to do steaks at home, but I would easily go back for the Boned-in Filet Mignon in this restaurant. Thanks to Matt for organizing.

These wines showed very very well and were well appreciated around the table. For the most part I thought these were well resolved fully mature wine all in a very nice stage. Whereas these wines may have seemed overly soft or sweet on release, perhaps our palates have shifted in the past 25 years along with the overall style of Bordeaux, making this vintage seem less of an outlier. In any case it is a vintage I've always like and they did not disappoint at this event.

* 1985 Château Léoville Poyferré - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Soft fruit, sweet resolved tannins with a lemon acidic cut. A bit tart and angular on finish.
B/B+

* 1985 Château Talbot - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Soft, broad, resolved with rubber/band aid, some light coffee and black fruit. Hint of sweet core. Good long firm finish. Complex and balanced. Excellent and easy to like.
A-

* 1985 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Cooked (FLAWED)

* 1985 Château Gruaud Larose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Rich, dense, powerful. Good tannic structure and herbal notes. Has a long life ahead. Long finish with licorice.
B+/A-

* 1982 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Served blind (my guess was a 1983 from the Margaux AC)
Herbal with a sweet core. Some acidic structure. Some life left in it. A bit lacking concentration.
B+

* 1985 Château Lafite Rothschild - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Smooth, complex and herbal. Soft but not flabby. Sweet core. Long finish with citric acidity. Bit of licorice. Very very nice.
A-

* 1985 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Warm, sooth, sweet. Lovely. Smooth, silky. Easy to like. A blond bombshell of a wine. This was my last bottle. I had thought from my previous bottle that this wine was on the decline, but this bottle showed beautifully. A gorgeous wine still on it's plateau and drinking wonderfully, at least this bottle. A treat and my WOTN.
A

* 1985 Château Canon - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Sweet, concentrated, broad, soft. Light streak of acid. Full flavored and drinking well. Very very nice.
A-

* 1985 Château L'Evangile - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Espresso. Concentrated with dense and dark fruit. Long finish with an acidic edge.
B++

WOTN votes:
Lafite (16)
Talbot (9)
Lynch (8)
Gruaud (7)
Canon (6)

IIRC the 82 GPL was not included in the vote.
Leoville Poyferre (2)

Woweee, what a soiree!

Can I ask if Mortons hits you with a corking fee? I was at Atrisanal two years ago, and I think it was on the order of $35 per bottle. Maybe I just don't bring my own wines to restaurants enough, but I thought that was pretty steep.

We have a special deal with Morton's. Ask them and they may waive corkage for you. It's a very good venue for an event like this.

Thanks for posting your notes.

My son was born in 85 and this is the only time I ever bought case lots of great growths en primeur.

I've had some very fine experiences some of the wines you mentioned as well.

All the best,
Alex

Matt, thanks for your report.
Tom, I think Morton's normal corkage is $25/bottle (though the NYC corkage wiki says $15). As Matt said, our group has been lucky in that Paul negotiated a no corkage deal. I think they're more likely to do that in a situation like ours where it's clear that it's deciding factor in choosing restaurant. Plus we don't usually do weekend nights, easier to get places to be flexible on a Monday or Tues.
Alex, lots of wines to enjoy. Enjoy your son's 25th!
