WTN: LimmerickLane Zin CollinsVnyd '94...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Feb 03, 2010 10:26 am

Cracked last night w/ low expectations:
1.LimmerickLane Zin CollinsVnyd/RRV/SonomaCnty (14.2%; Vnyd dates from 1910) 1994: Dark color w/ some browning; rather pencilly/cedary slight herbal some blackberry/Zin/spicy rather complex/old Zin nose; tart quite cedary/pencilly/old Zin slight licorice/pungent some blackberry/Zin/spicy slight dried out/astringent flavor; very long spicy/licorice/pungent quite cedary/pencilly/milky/oak some spicy/blackberry/Zin classic old Zin finish w/ some astringent/dried out tannins; still very much alive and a pleasure to drink though clearly on the downside.

1. LimmerickLane....now here's a wnry that used to have a stellar reputation for its Zins...but gets no buzz anymore. Haven't had a wine of theirs in over decade. Spotted this lonely btl in the archives and expected it to be totally shot. It was not...still very much alive. Though drying out some, it was indeed a pleasure to drink. I should revisit their wines again.
LimmerickLane makes one of the very rare Furmints in Calif. Don't know of any other wnry/vnyd that grows that variety. Not sure the story behind the Furmint.

I don't think I have seen a Limmerick Lane on the store shelf in a decade. Now that I think about it there are a lot of those lables that were so prevealent that I no longer see in the store. The first that come to mind are Guenoc and well I can't actually remember the name - Gunderlach or something strange like that. More Zin specific, I don't think I have seen a Green and Red or Renwood in ages. Hendry use to be prevalent but I believe its only available at one of the 7 stores that I frequent in the Maryland/D.C. area.

Limerick Lane is still there, up the hill from Foppiano, on the east side of 101, just south of Healdsburg. I haven't been up there in a couple of years, though I do have a bottle of '04 Zin lurking in the cellar. I can't remember ever seeing it in a store.
BTW, the name is from the road, which used to lead to a lime kiln operation - called a lime rick in the old days. They pronounce it like the two words.

I, too, miss seeing old brands such as Guenoc (but I saw some at BevMo recently), Gundlach-Bundschu, Green & Red, though I know they're all still in operation.
