Romeira Vinho de Mesa Tinto

by Rob Mergle » Mon Feb 01, 2010 6:18 pm

I have inherited 2 bottles of the subject named wine (vintage 1972) and can't seem to find much on the vintner; and absolutely nothing on this particular vintage. The bottles are still "sealed".

Does anyone have a clue whether this wine/vintage has any "real" value? Has it turned to vinegar and should be just thrown away? Are there any websites I can get more information from about this particular vintage?

Since I'm a complete novice, any information and/or direction will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry Rob, I am afraid I can't tell you anything about your wines, but wanted to take this opportunity to welcome you to the "boards."

Why don't you tell us something about yourself?

Does the bottle give any other indication of where the wine was made - a town or region (e.g. Douro)? I don't know what the Portuguese DOC rules were like in 1972, but today a Vinho de Mesa would be basic stuff.

And of course, if they haven't been stored properly, even if they were better than basic back then they're likely toast now.

Rob, welcome and thanks for bringing your question here, but the fact is that if these wines had any value, trust me--such is the level of expertise on this board with regard to older European wines that many many here would know all about that wine and own many bottles of it. Also, just FYI, I'll add that age by itself does not bring value--even highly collectible wines with known track records for ageability are valueless unless temperature controlled storage since initial purchase can be vouched for. At best, you may have a pleasant pizza wine there, but even that's not very likely. Sorry!
