WTN: 2008 Sandbanks Estate Baco Noir (Ontario VQA)

$14.95 at the LCBO (currently on general-list in the VQA section); natural cork closure; 11.8% alc./vol.

My first ever time trying a Baco from Prince Edward County (northeastern Lake Ontario area). Very dark beet-garnet in colour, a gorgeous hue; black at the core. Two hours of decanting allowed the wine to open up and reveal a true varietal nose of gamey/briney peppercorn and leafy/plum fruit, all accented by subtle oak spice. Swirling produces attractive magenta-tinged tears down the sides of the glass. Very full texture on the entry, with tangy Baco acidity immediately backed up by some residual sweetness. Cleansing and balanced on the mid-palate. Refreshing and lively. Oak spice comes into play towards the middle, and it wraps up the finish. Tannins are typically dusty and light as is the case with Baco.

This went very well with the herb-coated duck legs that I roasted with some apple slices and basil.
