WTN: Leeuwin Prelude Cab/Merlot 99; soggy and cloying.

Margaret River Prelude Vineyards Cabernet Merlot 1999 – Leeuwin Estate (Est. 1974) – Alc. 15% :!: I am quite a fan of Leeuwin but I probably kept this one too long; it must have been more lively when I tasted it in its youth.

Colour was still quite deep ruby and the nose was strongly developed but attractively complex with rich sweet red and dark fruit, black currants, with hints of cedar. The richness of the fruit thickened, sweetened and jammed up on the palate (high alcohol?) and tended to obliterate any of complexity apparent on the nose; in its 11th year there was also a shortage of lively acidity, the tannins were soggy and the finish tended to cloy. The absence of obtrusive oak and acid adjustment (probably) were mitigating circumstances. Blind, I might have guessed a Merlot dominated Amarone style wine; this was not what we wanted to pair with a delicious steak of Irish beef; 14/20.

Doesn't sound pleasant. I'm not a fan of the 99 Leeuwin reds - wasn't too taken by this when I had it a couple of years back, and found the estate Art Series Cab too alcoholic and jammy for my tastes.

Salil, this worries me because I have some bottles of Art Series Cab 98. I hope its only the 99 vintage which is the problem.

I enjoyed the Art Cab 93; it had a quite Bordelais gentle green streak which I like because of the elegance it brings. I guess that a lot of Antipodean wine-lovers would reject it for the same reason.
