WTN: Various incl. PN, riesling, tokaji, douro

Brief impressions from a few recent wines:

2007 Quinta do Coa, CARM, Douro (Portugal): When a local shop had these on sale at $15, I had to try one. Still very young and tight, without much nose until it opened up on the 2nd day. Nicely structured, good modern style, dark fruited with some coal smoke. Not a blockbuster, but needs time. Organically grown in the Douro Superior.

2004 Pinot Noir, Flat Rock Cellars, Gravity, VQA Niagara (Ontario): Unmistakable PN nose with a medium-light carmine color. Nicely balanced red fruits, roses with a decently long, crisp finish. Very well judged for a new world PN - not clumsily oaked or trying to be syrah. Think village Cote de Beaune. Labeled 13.5% abv but not showing it. An early effort from a Niagara winery focussing on PN, Chard and Riesling and doing a good job. This is a blend of various Dijon clones (115, 667, etc.) - they were tasting individual bottlings of each clone plus this wine when I was visiting, which was an interesting experiment. Screw cap closure.

2006 Riesling, Damiani Vineyards, Finger Lakes (NY):
Lots of lime/creamsickle notes on both the nose and palate, trailing off nicely to a slatey finish. Very primary, and the very light color supports the youthful theme. Probably 2-3% sugar, but it comes off fairly dry. Not as full bodied as many FL Rieslings. Will probably be more interesting in a few years - somewhat one-dimensional now. This place is making some good reds from their own vineyards, but I think they purchase the Riesling grapes. 11.5% abv.

2008 Tokaji Quatro Mani, Kristancic, Brda Gorska (Slovenia): Kristancic is the man behind Movia and he makes this for the US importer. Very distinctive stuff: flat, very dry ginger ale (in a good sense) with a squirt of grapefruit juice and some mint leaves. Lively and distinctive.

Hi Joe...Enjoyed with tonight's dinner, one of those Damiani reds you referred to, clearly one of the best FL reds I have tasted to date, the 2005 Damiani Cab Franc..very nice wine indeed!!

I'm glad you enjoyed that Cab Franc - I just happen to have a bottle of that wine that I picked up at their tasting room. Do you think it is worth holding or is it one to drink in the near term? I seem to recall thinking it would need some age to settle down.

Joe, I have enjoyed the Coa even though it is a tad "international" for me!
I am about to go into a big CARM buying spree...when in-house probation officer heads out to Gull Lake!

Joe..the CF is very pleasant to drink now but, it seems to me that there is a bright beam of fruit peeking out from some unsresolved tannins,,no rush,,enjoy now or hold for another 1-2 years..I picked up mine from their tasting room as well, just a short drive up the east side of Seneca from John Z's Silver Springs, an annual visit for us..we have pencilled in Damiani as a regular stop as well on our east side tours of Seneca. I think 2007 was our first visit to them and we were clueless as to where they were.., drove past the place, twice, wound up calling them for directions only to find that we were at most 100 yards away from them..Wd not happen again now that the Queen Mother has GPS in her Mountaineer.

Have you had a look at the CARM website? Those wines come from some very forlorn looking territory in the far reaches of the (Portuguese) Douro. I don't mean to slight them by dropping the word modern, because they still speak of the Douro, but seem a bit more polished than some. While I'm not a huge fan of Douro whites I hear their branco is good, as is the olive oil.

Hi Joe,
Nice note on the '04 Flat Rock Pinot. It think they have the right focus for Niagara in sticking with Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Chardonnay. They have a great site for these grapes, they seem to ripen nicely despite the vintage variation we have here in Niagara, Far too many producers trying to grow the Bordeaux varieties.
