WTN: Two With Dinner...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Jan 26, 2010 10:52 am

Tried these last night at dinner:
1. TrefethenFamilyVnyds DryRiesling OakKnollDist/NapaVlly (13%; www.Trefethen.com; 100% EstateGrown) 2008: Pale yellow near colorless; strong floral/JR slight pineapple/mango some minerally/stoney slight Mosel/valve oil fragrant nose; very tart/lean light floral/pineapple/JR slight steely/minerally flavor; med.short tart/lean light floral/JR/pineapple slight minerally/stoney/steely finish; very attractive nose but doesn't deliver much oomph on the palate; badly needs 5-15 yrs of age. $19.00

2. BelleGlos Meiomi PinotNoir SonomaCoast (14.6%; www.BelleGlos.com) 2007: Med.color; attractive/perfumed/fragrant bright/black cherry/PN very light charred/toasty/oak quite spicy nose; tart fairly smooth/polished bright cherry/black cherry/PN very light toasty/Fr.oak slight pungent/spicy bright flavor; med.long smooth/polished bright/black cherry/PN light pungent/oak finish w/ light tannins; may improve for a yr or two; a very delicious bright/black cherry PN at a very good price. $21.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Trefethen: Saw this on the shelf last night and realized I hadn't tried a Trefethen Riesling since...probably the early '70's...so sprung for it. A very attractive nose but pretty underwhelming on the palate...for now. But it has an acidity and a leaness that makes me believe that its best days are down the road. I'd give this wine at least 5 yrs and I have little doubt that it'll go out 15 yrs or more. I expect this will turn into something really terrific.

what does JR and PN stand for? pinot noir? Or taster's initials?

I'm guessing they stand for the grapes.

Johannisberg Riesling and Pinot Noir.

Yup..that's correct. Sorry for the obscure abbreviations.
