Notes from Monday's tasting at Straits Wine Co.
Bird in Hand Two in the Bush Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc 2009 - From Adelaide Hills. Gently sweet, round, medium-bodied, slightly honeyed. A little short but a pretty good Sem/SB blend. P 812.00
Kangarilla Road Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 - From McLaren Vale. Oak nose with the slightest hint of sulfur. Oak carries onto the palate which also has a rather prominent acidity. Quite tannic and dry. The acidity is bothersome to me. P 1645.00. 90 points Parker.
Chateau Maris Organic Syrah 2007 - Minervois, Languedoc. Slightly hot nose. Rich, meaty, a lot of mushroom. Ripe, sweet fruit and smoke. Good length. Firm, but not strong, tannins. This has a real rustic charm and personality to it. Very expressive. The more I drink it the more I'm enjoying it. For current drinking and my favorite wine of the night. Excellent and a bargain at the price of P 752.00.
Nashwauk Shiraz 2006 - From McLaren Vale. Lovely nose. Ripe berries and gentle oak. Rich, sweet, spicy and oaky. Good length, lively acidity and soft tannins. Later, mocha, good complexity. Too oaky for my taste, though. P 1363.00. 91 points Parker.
Two Hands The Bad Impersonator Shiraz 2006 - Barossa. Deep nose. Very long, polished and smooth. excellent balance although the oak shows a bit on the finish. Deep and meaty with bright acidity. Excellent. P 2609.00. 91 points Parker.
2 Up Shiraz 2007 - South Australia. Short and flabby. Pass for me. Around P 650.00
Two Hands Brilliant Disguise Moscato 2009 - Grapey and not all that sweet. Very refreshing. A crowd pleaser. P 776.00 for 500 ml.
