WTN: A couple of rare whites

by ClarkDGigHbr » Wed Aug 23, 2006 1:33 am

My wife and I met a handful of folks at the Vin Grotto, a nice Wine Bar & Cafe in downtown Tacoma, this evening. I tasted two whites I had not encountered before. A quick search revealed they are known to several of our resident uber tasters, but apparently my palate has had a somewhat sheltered existence.

2004 Boutari Moschofilero (aka Moscophilero) from the Mantinia in Greece. This was a rather light, yet very crisp and very fruity specimen. Great chilled on the deck on a hot day.

2004 Whidbey Island Siegerrebe from the Puget Sound region of Washington. I thought this was a lovely, dry Gewurztraminer, but it had a slightly pink tint. Turns out this is a hybrid of Gewurztraminer and Madeleine Angevine, a red table grape. It was nicely made and went very well with Maryland-style crab cakes with red pepper aoli. Very appealing to aroma junkies ... like me.

Nice notes on a couple of unfamilar wines, Clark. Like the reference to crab cakes, one item we will have on an offline up here shortly.
