WTN: Bahans-Haut-Brion 2000

by Jon Peterson » Sun Jan 24, 2010 1:19 pm

You don't see many TNs from me but I had to post this one. What a very nice wine this was. Liz and I found ourselves home sans kids on Saturday and decided not to go out for dinner but rather to grill some nice steaks (local, grass fed beef) and open a better-than-usual wine. This wine was decanted about an hour before dinner, no sediment to speak of. Beautiful deep, clear garnet color. A taste immediately upon decanting was very smooth and pleasant. An hour later the wine revealed an initial hint of sweetness, which surprised me a little, but which immediately disappeared and was followed by dark berry, cedar, oak, leather and very slight pencil shaving scents. Well balanced light tannins and 13% alcohol. It has been a while since we had a wine this nice and reminds me of the joys of having small cellar.

I'm glad you enjoyed this wine which, alas, no longer exists.

Haut Brion now calls it "Le Clarence de Haut Brion", a name I like a lot less...

Thanks for the notes Jon.
The initial sweetness that you noted, seems to abound with most good Bordeaux 2000 vintage wines that I;ve had. In addition, the complexity that you describe this wine is pretty much in line with most of the 2000's that I liked.
