WTN: Cuvee Freddy with veal piccata? Yep

by Dale Williams » Fri Jan 22, 2010 12:45 pm

No wine last night ((working), but just realized I didn't post on Wednesday's winner. Betsy made veal piccata, with an anchovy accented Swiss chard dish as the side. I thought about a big Italian white, but none were easily accessible. So how about a non-traditional match, the 2002 Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile Riesling. It actually worked pretty well, the lemon accents of the dish and wine playing well, and wine big enough to stand up to the capers. Lemon and grapefruit, limestone and wet rocks. Good ripeness but plenty of acidic spine, excellent length. I'd be hard pressed to declare a favorite between this and the regular 2001. Lovely wine, a bargain at $40. A-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Very nice. I am a big fan of both the 2001 and 2002 as well. The 2000 is none too shabby either. A very nice run of vintages for CFE. Have you seen the 2002 CFE VT anywhere?

No, haven't seen it. Max at Wine Connection is a big Trimbach guy, and often has early offers (and well priced).

I see that Sherry Lehmann currently has free shipping on orders over $250 anywhere in US, and both 2002 and 2004 CFE for $37. Good deals imho (haven't tried 04 yet)

That's a good price on the '02. I've had the '04 and was not fond of it. It tasted like it had some of the meanie greenies. When I tried it a couple of other folks who I trust had the same reaction. And I am not averse to the greenies in Burgs, so take that for what it's worth.

After reading your TN, I immediately searched Wine Conn and didn't see any. Then I spotted the Sherry-Lehmann price at WS. Thanks for the enablement, I'm going for a few.

Actually, it got me on SL site too. I have the 2002, but ordered one 2004 (I believe David, but CFE is a yearly try for me, and due to his caution I just ordered one). I also got 3 bottles of the very nice 2007 Roulot Bourgogne, well priced at $23.
Free shipping in NYS for $75 orders.

I had a bottle of the 02 CFE in fall last year and your note nails it - that is a fantastic wine.

You guys are making these CFE's sound pretty open for business. I have been sitting on 2 bottles of the 1995 as I thought they would need 10+ years but maybe I should open one soon. A 1990 back in 2002 was sublime.

I generally find CFE to be pretty tasty for a couple years after release, then somewhat shut down. It of course varies, some never really shut down (but those tend to be the ones that don't last as long). I won't be surprised if 02 shuts down soon.

The 90 regular CFE was still tasty (and young) about 2 years ago.
