WTN: Le Serre Nuove Dell' Ornellaia 2007

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Jan 22, 2010 11:26 am

DOC Bolgheri Rosso
Ornellaia

A blend of Merlot (40 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (40), Cabernet Franc (15) and Petit Verdot.

Decanted about 40 minutes before dinner.

Dark purple in the glass.

Earthy, spicy, floral, chocolate, gently roasted on the nose.

Thick, big and viscous in the mouth, black cherry, plummy, quite rich, chocolate, leather, good acidity, roasted notes. A warming and comforting wine, if that makes any sense.

A very long finish.

This is the "second wine" of Ornellaia and was an interesting and enjoyable wine to taste, particularly since I will never be able to afford the real thing. Having said that, I didn't feel it was interesting enough to warrant the price I paid for it.

Purchased at $59.95 (Canadian).

Sounds pretty much exactly like the 2005 I had last week. Interestingly, I put the leftovers in the fridge for about 4 nights and when we drank it then, it was actually a lot more attractive and nuanced, though still with some of its core characteristics there--just dialed down.

Thanks for the note!

Michael
