WTN: Hogue Fume Blanc, Columbia Valley 2007

Sometimes you get depressed when you realize you've stayed around long enough to realize how good it once was and compare it to what it has become.

Unfortunately, this Hogue is in that category.

Hogue used to be one of the shining stars of the Washington wine revolution. Under founder Mike Hogue (of the longtime Columbia Valley orchard family) Hogue managed to snag some great winemakers, and it consistently made wine of the highest caliber. It was the odds on favorite for quite a while to be one of the "breakout" wines of Washington to help establish it on the national wine scene.

It was, in part, what attracted me to leave Texas and relocate to the Washington area. My wife, for twenty years a resident in the Columbia, and deeply involved in the entire wine business, was friends with all the Hogue crew, and she and I promoted them at every opportunity as a winery to watch closely.

That was then.

Now, Hogue has been sold (twice by my latest count) and it changed from a pioneer of quality and distinction to just another place producing mediocre wine in large quantities. And that's sad.

This wine? Could have been just about anything, from anywhere, by anyone. Had a bit of vague lemony character, perhaps a hint of muddled herbal, but not a whole lot else. It is a monument to insipidity.

It's not the fruit source. The Sauvignon Blanc in the Columbia Valley is pretty damned good, as is the Semillon (although there's less of that now). Nope, this is just winemaking to the lowest level of blah to fill bottles.

And, as I said, that's sad.

Back in the early '90s they made a late harvest Riesling that was just delicious. I was able to try it again a couple of years ago & I just shook my head & dumped my glass. Now I am certain that I have changed through my immersion in what Riesling can do (and I am not the most avid supporter of Riesling in Washington to begin with), but it was bad.

"Monument to insipidity". Sums up virtually everything Hogue turns out these days nicely: overly soft and easy wines of indistinct varietal character. My memories only go as far back as the early 90's when we lived in Alaska and considered Hogue at around $6 a bottle great value. We especially liked a white they made in both a regular and a dry version--I'm embarrassed that I can't precisely recall if it was Chenin or Gewurz, but I think the former. Whatever--every summer we guzzled cases of it.

Like others I use to drink a lot of Hogue back in the early 90's. It helped that I was poor back then but still it was great stuff and I recommended it to many a friend. I drifted away from Hogue when I could afford to try more expensive stuff and luckily never tasted what it has become today.

Jenise, I do know that Hogue was doing a "regular" Riesling with about 3% RS (which was about average at the time, if not slightly higher, and a separate Dry Riesling. They were one of the first to do so. Don't recall whether they did the same in CB or Gewurz---but there was some tinkering around with dry-styled gewurzes then.

Back in the early 90s the shelf wars in the PacNW were fought over the QPRs we called the Rooty Tooties, with Columbia Crest, Columbia, Covey Run, Hogue and Ste. Chappelle going toe to toe with a series of soft, light, fresh, fruity (hence, Rooty Tooties) including JR, Gewurz, Chenin and, believe it or not, Muller-Thurgau (seriously!). Things is, they were all damned good drinkable wines

Hogue actually did some outstanding reds back then too. The owner of Barnard-Griffin was one of their early winemakers, then David (can't remember his last name now) had a great run. Wade Wolfe was on board for a while, but I lost track around then, and they got sold off and went straight downhill.

In the early 90s, I put the Chenin Blanc on a winelist here in Edmonton. The owner thought I was mad!
My staff hand-sold 3 cases in 2 weeks.

You are thinking of Rob Griffin. I feel that he is the one who put them on the map. He and his wife had started Barnard-Griffin as a side venture. Eventually he left Hogue for full time at his winery. Another little piece of info I heard yesterday is that Ch. St. Michelle will now be the importing agent for Villa Maria in New Zealand. I think this should prove very good for Villa Maria. This will be the first NZ winery they have dealt with. Villa is still family owned.

Hmmm...the founder/owner's sister lives at Semiahmoo just around the corner from me--I took a VM Clifford Bay SB to dinner one night and she saw the bottle, started up a conversation. They were leaving days later to spend a month there. Might explain why Washington.

Yes, Michael. And David Forsyth was his successor. (Thank the FSM I remembered his name.) I agree that Rob did put them on the map, but David was a more than able followup to what Rob had begun. After him, though...

I would certainly agree that David was able to keep the momentum going. Like you said, it is now just another huge volume brand.
