What wine to pair with grilled Tilapia?

by Mike Veilleux » Tue Jan 19, 2010 5:12 pm

Wife is grilling Tilapia with capers and lemon juice...she wants to add some white wine to the sauce, which would be the same wine we would drink at dinner. We have a Krug Chardonnay, Provenance Sauvignon Blanc and Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio....any thoughts?

Well forgetting the fact that I would opt for Gruner Veltliner, I would go with the Sauvignon.

We would opt for French Columbard, but that not whatstanding, agree with David.

I'll third the SB! The Krug would be too rich and the PG perhaps too soft. The SB should be just right.

Just last week I had some Tilapia. I had a bottle of Ferrari-Carano 2007 Reserve Chardonnay (Carneros) that was a bit to much for the fish. Something lighter would have worked better, maybe SB.

For what it's worth, tilapia is pretty bland so I think you could go a lot of ways depending on the sauce. Your sauce did seem to call for some of the tart wines with decent body. But there are many options!

Last night's '08 Tablas Creek Picpoul Blanc was an enjoyable match.

Had a wonderful grilled tilapia with pan fried garlic the other night. It was excellent, and the organic California sauvignon blanc I had with it fit it wonderfully. Yum.

I'm curious how the fish turned out. Tilapia is a rather delicate fish, somewhere between whitefish and farmed seabass. It is typically fileted, making it difficult to grill.

So...?

It was delicious...She did not grill it, she baked it in the oven and topped it with capers, green olives, butter, lemon juice and spices.....not sure if the topping was cooked with the fish or separately...when I came home it was being placed on a plate for me :-)
