Two smaller production cabernets that we enjoyed over the past few days.

2002 Goosecross Cellars "Howell Mountain" Cabernet Sauvignon. Did not even know I had this bottle...was not in the spreadsheet. :?

Much blacker and a little more tannic than the 2003 and 2004, which were pretty much fully open. With decanting and vigorous sloshing, however, this wine followed the tradition of delicious, balanced Goosecross Howell Mountain cabs...very meaty, licorice, black fruits. Fantastic stuff!

2003 Hope and Grace Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This newish winery is a project from consulting winemaker Charles Hendricks. http://www.hopeandgracewines.com/winemaker.html

I am a big fan of these wines. We tasted a Santa Rita Hills Pinot this weekend that was lovely in its elegance, restraint, and earthyness. I preferred it to the new 2008 Rochioli Estate Pinot, to be honest (the Rochioli was too young, to be fair). I might describe this as a "Chianti-styled" Cabernet. Not "Bordeaux style"...Chianti style. Very powerful and mouth watering acidity...plenty of black fruit, but the licorice/anise notes were very prominent-something I have grown to love in Cabs. Tannins still there, but not obtrusive. Alcohol in balance. Some earthyness. Went very well, believe it or not, with roasted tomato soup and pasta with roasted pumpkin seeds. :?: Very nice wine. Reaching a bit...this wine actually reminds me somewhat somehow of BV Georges de la Tour. Just a little bit...it has that kind of old school Napa Cab character.

After an awesome drive over Spring Mountain Road in the rain, we hit Rochiolli, which was releasing its 2008 Estate Pinot and Chardonnay. Neither rocked my world. :( They had a beautiful polo shirt, though, so I did the tourist thing...the logo was extremely low key so I don't feel like I am wearing a billboard.

Joseph Swan was awesome. The owner was there and gave a lot of interesting history. We had the chance to taste a 1986 Zinfandel that had the "old claret" nose but was full of vibrant acidity and fruit...in no way dead or even over the hill. I also found interesting the high acid, extremely floral 2004 Estate Syrah...amazingly juicy. I ended up with the 2006 Tannat, which was dry, tannic but approachable, and full of crunchy red fruit.
