WTN: Romance, then Muscat

2003 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese
Return of the Portuguese menace. Damnit (accompanied by the sound of a head banging against a wall).

2005 Zind-Humbrecht Muscat Goldert
A very handy substitute though with Thai takeout, combining bright floral and faintly musky elements with an intense mineral base and suggestions of tropical and white fruited flavours underneath. Really good balance and depth with plenty of acidity keeping it very precise and food-friendly, and a long finish that's all rose petals.

I had an '02 Herrenweg Muscat a few years back that was very (unexpectedly) dry. An interesting experience but not one that I would repeat very often. Sorry to hear about the Donnhoff. How are the '03s drinking now?

Dan,

Do you mean that you do not enjoy dry Muscat? Back in the Hans-Gunter Schwarz days the Muller-Catoir Muskateller Kabinett Trocken was one of my favorite dry wines, and boy was it ever dry.

I do find the bright floral nose a disconnect with bone dry Muscat, especially when I'm used to Muscat being a sweet easy quaffer. I'm willing to give it another shot, but I would struggle with a food match.

Fish or chicken with some kind of light citrus saucing (not sweet though - think lime zest or orange zest) works really well with dry Muscat for me.

Dry Muscat and (white) asparagus is considered a classic combo in Alsace, I believe.

Yup, Muscat and asparagus is a wonderful springtime treat in Alsace. I'm ready for the spring...
