WTN: 1 for 3

by Rahsaan » Sat Jan 16, 2010 2:15 am

Tough start to the night:

2004 Alzinger Riesling Smaragd Steinertal
Corked

2004 Alzinger Riesling Smaragd Loibenberg
Corked

At this point dinner was ready and I had to quickly dash downstairs to shove something in the freezer. But, luckily the 2006 Knoll Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Loibenberg got cool enough to drink with the second half of the meal and even more importantly it wasn’t corked! It was also good fun with rich ripe round fruit and the fun citrus oil flavors that make it so easy to keep drinking and pouring and drinking and pouring… It may tilt goofy and loose but thankfully it picks up a bit of detail and precision and slightly-tannic grip as it airs. No one will accuse it of being profound but I had no problem finishing the bottle.

I believe every diehard wine nut should have one of the sunbeam wine chillers in the cupboard. We would use it roughly once month for "emergencies" especially during summer. In 20 minutes perfectly chilled wine.

Nice gadget. Something else I can look out for!

When cooking at home I usually open the wines well before dinner to check for TCA and to avoid problems like this. But for several reasons yesterday I was running late and had only just put the two Alzingers in the refrigerator shortly before dinner.

Oh well, all's well that ends in two fewer corked bottles in my collection!

Hi Raashan,

Sorry to hear about the Alzingers, but you seem to have won in the end. The few 2006 Austrians that I've tried lately have left me thinking that the vintage is beginning to doze off (Eichinger and Brundlmayer Heiligenstein Rieslings.) Perhaps the Gruners are faring better.

Cheers,
Bill

Doze off meaning going to sleep or falling off their ripeness cliff?

Going to sleep. Their ripeness cliff is a very long fall!
