WTN miscellaneous wines with Friends

by Michael K » Wed Jan 13, 2010 9:45 pm

Opened a few bottles of wines for some friends. All were picked by them from my cellar so that would explain the haphazardness of the selections. Fine by me :) Also talking and laughing more than taking notes so these are impression by the end of the night.

2006 Vincent Girardin Pugliny-Montrachet, Vieilles Vignes, 1/2 bottles twist top. Nicely done wine, fresh, definitely heavy on the toast, vanilla, but after a while the minerality shows through, good density of flavors and nice persistence
2006 Lemelson Willamette Valley Pinot Noir: so popular, I never even got a chance to taste...... no idea here....
2006 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Serralunga d'Alba: Wow, I love this wine, good price and drinks more like a Burgundy than an italian. thoughtful and interesting nose, more strawberries, berries, nice high toned acidity, medium body, elegant with a little furriness. I was impressed.
2004 Hall T-Bar-T Ranch, Ripe but Reserved nose, leather, tobacco, good structure
2004 Tobin James Silver Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon: nicely evolving wine, nose of ripe black and red fruit, sweet, leather and some hints of tobacco, solid structure.
2004 Mission Hill Oculus, Corked..... I love this winery and I'm generally okay with this wine (just a bit heavy on the oak there) so I was looking forward to opening this but D@mn
2004 Mission Hills Five Vineyards Icewine: honey, dried lychee, lush, sweet, super smooth but simple and nothing much too interesting. Well done though.

Indeed. And funny that Michael mentions it drinking like a Burgundy because I can still feel the 05 Cascina Francia Barbera in my mind's palate that I drank over a year ago and which was opened by someone who usually (read 99.9% of the time) opens Burgundy.

:) I kept on going back to this wine over the night and it was very nice,. Local wine store told me not to leave without it. Not cheap but for a barbera but it got the conterno treatment :)
