Silver Oak 2005 Cab release date Feb 6th

by Jon Peterson » Wed Jan 13, 2010 5:43 pm

Anyone going to be at the Feb 6th events for the release of Silver Oak's 2005 Cab? I have been invited and will be there. It would be nice to know if someone from this forum is going. I have no idea what to expect.

Do you enjoy their wines, Jon?

The emphasis is definitely on the second word of the name, but what a lovely, elegant, green facility they have built in Oakville. I love the architecture!

A few years back when there was still hype about Silver Oak the highway patrol would help direct traffic on the release date. I'm sure there will be some traffic but I doubt if it will be even a shadow of what it used to be. It's not considered one of the hard to get, must have, wines anymore.

No, I am not a huge fan - I think I own one bottle - but maybe this experience will change my mind. However, I love to travel and look forward to four days in the San Francisco area. I'll have no food or lodging costs and airfare was only $240.00 round trip from DC. Who could complain, even if it will feel like I'm chewing on oak staves when I try the wine? The intention of my post was to not miss another WLDGer if someoner happened to be there.

Certainly sounds like a bargain that is too hard to pass up.

I may try to sample when I'm out there. No real interest since the late 90's. The last one Terry & I tried was the '01. Not great!!

An Alaskan friend's husband recently gave her a bottle of SO for her birthday. They're retired now, but way back when it was one of their favorite special occasion wines when dining out at home in Alaska or in Palm Springs where they spent some winter months every year. The bottle was a disappointment, and she was confused about whether the wine had changed or they had. "Both," I suggested. I honestly no of no one who once revered the wine who still does. Seems to be a wine to lust after early in one's hobby, then to grow out of.

I honestly no of no one who once revered the wine who still does.

Could be because several years ago the founding spirit of Silver Oak, Justin, a rather remarkable individual, had a difference of opinion with his partner---said partner wanting to maximize the profit opportunities of the operation and increase production about fivefold; and mind you, they were already producing a significant amount)---and he became disappointed with the way things were going, so he allowed the partner to buy him out.

Justin died a few years later. Partner did what he wanted and bumped up production considerably and made (and is still making) lots of money. I did not like the wines of Silver Oak before the change, but that was because I didn't like the style; after the change, I had considerably less reason to like the wine.

Whenever the winemaking shifts from wanting to make the best wine possible (in your preferred style) to making the most wine possible...I don't recall ever seeing that paradigm improve the wine in question. Quite the opposite.

Ah, didn't know the story. Thanks: I'll pass that on to Anne, she'll be glad to know that her memory really isn't THAT bad. :)
