WTN: 2004 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco

2004 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco 14.0%
Aromas show less fruit and more other stuff, like tar, black pepper, pine resin and new vanilla. Creamy, almost chunky mouth feel, good acidity, medium tannins, light bitter finish. There was absolutely nothing wrong with this, but there was no charm to it, no iota above the Σ of the parts. Marcia liked it better, especially the tannins, and ventured the proposition that I am becoming difficult. Perish the thought.
"I went on a rigorous diet that eliminated alcohol, fat and sugar. In two weeks, I lost 14 days." Tim Maia, Brazilian singer-songwriter.

Oswaldo
FWIW this is a problem I usually find with young Barolo/Barbaresco. Even (or especially) barrique doesn't help.
However from what we tasted at the winery, I'm not sure I'll find too much excitement in their wines, though it's a visit I'd definitely recommend - interesting, courteous and impressive.

Oswaldo,
When I tasted this wine last year I found it rather charming, but perhaps a bit simple, lacking in depth. The Conca had much more in it as had the Rocche, though the latter was pretty hard and a bit tough to taste at the time. I quite liked Ratti's style of which I had very little previous experience.

Cheers,
Anders
