2003 Daniel Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Spatlese

by Michael K » Sun Jan 10, 2010 2:11 pm

It's been I while since I've gone back to this wine (almost four years now).

The wine is still a very clean straw slight gold hued color. Nose on opening is still got the nice white flowers and stone fruit nose. This wine still is very ripe and honeyed and that tends to be the dominant element in this wine and as others have writen (thank you JC) "not as crisp and focused as some other vintages". On the palate, it is very smooth (as I'm sure this was really an auslese level sweetness) and still a nice floral, stone fruit honey flavours. While not one of his more typical vintages, a decent wine to enjoy nonetheless.

Daniel's 2003s are very enjoyable. The gold cap Spatlese is especially delicious.

Thanks for the great note, Michael. I liked the 2004 of this but have not had a chance to try 2003. I own both 05 and 06 and ought to check in on those--thanks for the reminder!

David,

I agree on the gold cap! I've tried his goldcap from 03 and purchased 2 mags on the spot :) wish I had purchased more looking back now but they are still nicely resting. Any suggestion as to when they might be ready? I was gonna wait for a few years more to try the first one.

Michael, Nice that you've got a few of his wines, especially the 05's. I've was introduced to his wines starting in his 2001 vintage and have his stuff starting from then. Unfortunately I've never tried his 2000's (his first vintage) which I understand are quite good especially given the vintage.
